CSA Scores: They matter, and you are in control!

Managing compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) scores is important for all commercial operators, as safety ratings are serious business. CSA scores are updated monthly to track and analyze transportation companies and most of the data is gathered from documentation and vehicle maintenance. As a driver, it is important to be able to manage what you can during roadside inspections.

Below are a few tips to help you do your part with CSA scores:

  • Always keep your daily log current and accurate. Any falsifications will likely be found and penalties can be assessed.
  • When driving, be alert and continuously scan your mirrors to get the big picture of where other motorists are in relation to you.
  • Do not complete logs or any other paperwork while operating the vehicle. Take time to complete all forms when you are off the road.
  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections for every trip. Taking time to verify your vehicle is properly maintained. A well maintained vehicle can save you from time loss due to breakdowns and can reduce your chances of an accident.

Being accountable and doing your part is vital to managing CSA scores. These scores help the FMCSA determine which companies need intervention and also allow it to monitor and address any safety problems in the transportation industry. CSA scores have been created to help improve safety and increase accountability at all levels of an organization.

Good CSA scores are vital to maintain because they can affect business severely. Checking vehicles before and after day of use is critical to ensuring there are no deficiencies. In addition, having up-to-date paperwork that is properly maintained is also critical and can minimize the chance for negative inspections.
